Recently the Sri Lanka Puttalam Coal-fired Power Station Project contracted by CMEC completed its Phase I construction. This power station is the first coal-fired power station of Sri Lanka and the largest economic and trade cooperation project between China and Sri Lanka since the countries established diplomatic relation.

The Puttalam Coal-fired Power Station Project Phase I Project will add 300 KW of power supply to the Sri Lanka state grid. The official operation of the project will provide 87% of Sri Lanka’s power supply and ensure uninterrupted power for the local people all day long.

The Puttalam Coal-fired Power Station is located about 130 km north of Colombo. Upon completion of Phases I and II of the project, the installed capacity of the power station will reach 900 KW and account for one third of the existing installed capacity of Sri Lanka, making it the power station with the highest generation capacity in the country.

In the past Sri Lanka relied mainly on oil-fired power generation which was highly expensive and fell short of the domestic power demands. The completion of this project will ease the power shortage of Sri Lanka, lower the cost of living for the local, improve people’s livelihood and play a significant role in promoting the economic and social development of Sri Lanka.
